In Dakar, most businesses reply faster on WhatsApp than by email. A plumber in Sacre Coeur, a delivery service in Plateau or a ride company in Almadies will ask you to send your request as a message. The trick is writing at the right time, with the right opening, and knowing a serious contact from a scam.

Greetings that actually get you an answer

The greeting is the door into the conversation. Opening with "how much?" reads as blunt and slows the reply down.

• Start with Salam aleykoum or Bonjour, then introduce yourself in one line: first name, neighbourhood, need.
• Add Nanga def if you are comfortable with a word of Wolof. It warms up the exchange.
