Vibe: a buzzing capital or a beach resort

Dakar never really slows down. Think busy markets, traffic, art galleries, live music and grilled fish by the ocean. Each neighborhood feels different:

• Almadies and Ngor: seafront, hotels, restaurants and nightlife, a safe bet for a first visit.
• Plateau: historic and business center, near the TER station.
• Point E, Mermoz and Sacré-Cœur: calm residential areas, well located, with plenty of furnished apartments.
• Ouakam and Yoff: fishing village atmosphere, more local, close to the sea.

Saly, on the Petite Côte, is built for relaxing: pools, holiday residences and a slow pace. Next door, Ngaparou and Somone are even quieter.

For swimming, Saly wins. The sea is usually calmer than along Dakar's coastline, where currents can be strong. In Dakar, most people swim at Ngor, the Almadies or on Ngor Island, and it pays to be careful on unsupervised beaches.

For culture, Dakar is unmatched: Gorée Island, the Museum of Black Civilizations, the African Renaissance Monument, Kermel market. From Saly, day trips lean towards the Bandia wildlife reserve or the Somone lagoon.

For nights out, Dakar offers far more choice, especially on weekends in the Almadies, Ngor and the Plateau. Saly has evening life too, just calmer.

Budget: what to expect

Prices follow the seasons. High season runs from December to April. For the Youth Olympic Games, book early.

• Basic room or hostel: roughly 15,000 to 30,000 FCFA per night.
• Mid-range hotel: roughly 35,000 to 70,000 FCFA per night.
• Upscale hotel or resort: often above 90,000 FCFA per night.

In Saly, residences with a kitchen suit families. On payments, Visa is the most widely accepted foreign card in hotels, supermarkets, malls and many restaurants in Dakar and Saly's resorts. Carry FCFA cash for taxis, markets and small shops. ATMs are the easiest way to get it, since exchange offices are mostly at the airport and in central Dakar. Ride-hailing apps such as Yango and Heetch are paid in cash or by mobile money, not by card.

Distance and Dakar 2026: how to combine both

The drive between Dakar and Saly takes about 1 h 15 to 2 h on the toll motorway, depending on traffic. Avoid rush hour, especially on Friday evenings.

The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, from 31 October to 13 November 2026, for athletes aged 15 to 18, are spread across three hubs:

• Dakar: Complexe Tour de l'Œuf (swimming, skateboarding, breaking, 3x3 basketball, Baseball5), Complexe Iba Mar Diop in Médina (athletics, boxing, futsal, rugby sevens), Corniche Ouest (road cycling).
• Diamniadio: Dakar Arena, the Diamniadio Exhibition Centre, the equestrian centre and Stade Abdoulaye Wade.
• Saly: Saly plage ouest for beach volleyball, beach handball, beach wrestling, coastal rowing, triathlon and sailing.

Following the beach sports? Stay in Saly or Ngaparou. For events in Dakar and Diamniadio, the Plateau and areas near TER stations work well: the line serves Dakar (Plateau), Colobane, Hann, Pikine, Thiaroye, Rufisque, Bargny and Diamniadio.
