Storage and warehousing in Dakar: a practical guide

Your lease ends before the new flat is ready, you are heading back to Paris for a year, or your shop is drowning in boxes. Dakar offers two answers: a private box you hold the key to, or a shared warehouse where your things are palletised alongside other clients' goods. Duration, volume and humidity decide which one fits.

Private box or shared warehouse

A private box is a locked unit you enter during opening hours, pulling out a suitcase without warning anyone. Sizes run from a small locker that fits a Point E studio to a twenty cubic metre unit that swallows a three bedroom flat in Mermoz.

In a shared warehouse your furniture is wrapped, filmed, put on pallets or into wooden crates and logged in an inventory. You cannot walk in freely and retrieving an item takes a few days' notice, but the price per cubic metre drops sharply. Most diaspora families leaving for two or three years pick this option.

Rule of thumb: if you expect to open your boxes more than once a quarter, pay for a private unit. Otherwise the warehouse saves real money.

Where to store, neighbourhood by neighbourhood

  • Plateau, Point E, Sacré-Cœur, Liberté 6: almost no storage sites downtown, land is far too costly, so expect to be sent to the outskirts.
  • Almadies, Ngor, Yoff, Ouakam, Mermoz: many movers sit along the western corniche and near the old airport, handy if you drop everything the day before a flight.
  • Pikine, Guédiawaye, Keur Massar: the biggest hangars and the softest per cubic metre rates. Budget travel time, the VDN and the Rufisque road are heavy in the morning.
  • Rufisque, Diamniadio: industrial zones and newer warehouses along the toll motorway, suited to large volumes and commercial stock arriving through the port.

What it costs and how long you commit

As rough orders of magnitude, not tied to any company:

  • Small box of three to five cubic metres: often 25 000 to 60 000 FCFA per month.
  • Medium box of ten to fifteen cubic metres: often 70 000 to 150 000 FCFA per month.
  • Shared warehouse on pallets: billed per cubic metre, roughly 4 000 to 12 000 FCFA per cubic metre per month.
  • Packing, handling and the truck on the way in: a separate quote scaled to volume and to which floor you live on.

Minimum duration is usually one month, sometimes three in a warehouse. Get the notice period and the exit fees in writing, since retrieval handling is sometimes charged separately. Discounts exist on six or twelve month commitments, and a deposit of around one month is common.

Humidity and security: the real traps

The main enemy is not theft, it is salty humidity. From July to October the hivernage combines heat with salt laden air, and a poorly ventilated hangar turns a sofa into a mould farm within weeks.

  • Visit the site before signing: touch the walls, hunt for white salt marks or water stains on floor and ceiling.
  • Choose a raised unit, or put pallets under your boxes, never straight onto the concrete slab.
  • Wrap wood and leather in paper or breathable cloth, not in airtight plastic film that traps condensation.
  • Drop moisture absorbers and pieces of charcoal into boxes of textiles, books and documents.
  • Dry appliances fully, especially the fridge, before they go in.

On security, check the permanent guarding, lighting, cameras, fencing and above all insurance: many contracts cover the building but not the contents. Take a dated photo inventory before the truck leaves.
