Mamelles Neighborhood Guide, Dakar: Lighthouse and Tips

Discover Mamelles in Dakar, between Ouakam and Yoff: the lighthouse, the nearby African Renaissance Monument, food, health, housing and how to get around.

Mamelles Neighborhood Guide, Dakar

Wedged between Ouakam and the old Yoff airport, Mamelles takes its name from the twin volcanic hills that rise over Dakar's western tip. Most visitors come for the lighthouse, the ocean views and the nearby African Renaissance Monument, yet it is also a quiet residential area popular with families.

The Mamelles lighthouse and the African Renaissance Monument

The Mamelles lighthouse stands on the taller of the two hills, roughly a hundred metres above the sea. On a clear day the view sweeps from the Almadies and Ngor down to the Plateau. Getting up means a steep walk from the Corniche road, around fifteen to twenty minutes.

On the neighbouring hill, the African Renaissance Monument towers over Ouakam. Both sites fit easily into a single half day, and our African Renaissance Monument visitor guide covers the second one in detail.

Practical tips:

  • Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon for softer light and cooler air.
  • Wear proper shoes and bring water, there is little shade on the path.
  • From July to October the rainy season brings sudden showers, so check the sky first.

Food, pastry shops and going out

Mamelles has a modest food scene, calmer than the Almadies strip. Along the Corniche and on the inner streets you will find restaurants with sea views, neighbourhood pastry shops, grilled meat stalls and fast food. A simple local dish usually costs 2,000 to 5,000 FCFA, while a sit-down restaurant meal tends to run 8,000 to 20,000 FCFA per person.

On Sundays, families from Mermoz, Sacré-Cœur and Liberté 6 drive out for some sea air on the Corniche, followed by a cake or a cold local juice. Try bissap, bouye (baobab) and ginger juice, sold almost everywhere. Ouakam and Ngor beaches are only minutes away, and our Ouakam neighborhood guide explores the area next door.

Health, artists and galleries

The area has pharmacies and private practices, including a paediatric clinic, which is reassuring for young parents. For serious emergencies, the larger clinics in Mermoz, Point E and the Plateau are twenty to forty minutes away depending on traffic. Save the official numbers: 17 for police, 18 for the fire brigade and 1515 for SAMU ambulances.

On the creative side, the closeness of Ouakam and Ngor draws artists and designers. Workshops, small studios and galleries often occupy converted villas. To find these and other leisure spots, browse the travel and tourism listings for Dakar on SeneFinder.

Living in Mamelles

Mamelles appeals to professionals, expats and returning diaspora: sea breeze, relative calm and easy access to the Almadies. Rents are high, though. A two-bedroom flat typically goes for 300,000 to 600,000 FCFA a month, and a villa with a garden for considerably more. Families on a tighter budget often look at Ouakam, Yoff or Liberté 6 instead.

Before you sign:

  • Depending on the street, the nearby Yoff airfield can mean some noise.
  • Visit any property both by day and in the evening, and insist on a written lease.

Getting around

The western Corniche road links Mamelles to the Plateau in twenty to forty minutes. Taxis are easy to find: agree on the fare before getting in, with a ride to the Plateau usually costing 2,500 to 4,000 FCFA. Dakar Dem Dikk buses and the colourful cars rapides serve the VDN and Ouakam for a few hundred francs. Coming from Blaise Diagne International Airport in Diass, allow one to one and a half hours on the toll motorway, longer at rush hour through Rufisque or Diamniadio.
