Mbour guide: getting to know the fishing capital of the Petite Côte

Mbour is the big fishing town of Senegal's Petite Côte, about 80 km south of Dakar. This Mbour guide covers the fishing beach, town centre, pharmacies, places to stay and the Joal road, and explains how Mbour differs from Saly, the beach resort next door.

The fishing beach and fish market

Mbour's heartbeat is the fishing quay on the beach. Late in the afternoon, hundreds of painted pirogues come ashore and the landing becomes a show of porters, fish traders, trucks and horse carts. A few tips:

  • Go between 4 pm and 6 pm, when most boats return.
  • Wear closed shoes you don't mind getting dirty.
  • Ask before taking photos of fishermen and traders.
  • Buy straight from the boats: thiof, sea bream, sole, sardinella or prawns depending on the season. Prices depend on the catch.

Next door, the fish market and the drying and smoking areas show the whole supply chain.

Town centre, neighbourhoods and shopping

Central Mbour, around the Escale district and the main market, is where you find banks, money transfer counters, hardware stores, fabric shops and phone sellers. Residential neighbourhoods such as Tefess, Grand Mbour, Mbour Sérère, Thiocé and Médine have a lively local feel, with corner shops and small eateries where a plate of thiéboudienne usually costs 1,000 to 2,000 FCFA.

Pharmacies are easy to find in the centre and along the main roads, and a rota of duty pharmacies covers nights and weekends. In an emergency, dial 18 for the fire brigade, 17 for the police or 1515 for SAMU ambulances.

Where to stay, hospitality training and the Joal road

Accommodation ranges from small town hotels to furnished apartments for longer stays and quieter camps further south. A basic room in town typically costs 15,000 to 35,000 FCFA a night, more on the seafront and during holidays. Browse hotels and tourism listings in Mbour to compare.

Mbour is also a training hub for the tourism trade, with a hospitality school supplying staff to hotels along the coast.

The Joal road heads south through Mballing, Warang and Nianing, lined with camps, vehicle rental agencies and calmer beaches. Around 30 km away, Joal-Fadiouth and its shell island make a rewarding day trip.

Mbour or Saly: what's the difference?

Saly sits just a few kilometres north, yet it feels like another world. Saly is a purpose-built beach resort: seafront hotels, gated residences, restaurants and nightlife. Mbour is a genuine Senegalese town, busy and commercial, built around fishing and trade. Many visitors sleep in Saly and pop into Mbour for shopping, the fish landing or a pharmacy, while others choose Mbour for lower prices and a more authentic experience.

Getting around and getting there

  • From Dakar: the toll motorway takes you to Mbour in about one to one and a half hours outside rush hour, passing near AIBD airport. Shared seven-seater taxis and minibuses leave from bus stations in Dakar, Pikine and Rufisque for roughly 2,500 to 4,000 FCFA.
  • In town: agree on the taxi fare before getting in, usually 500 to 1,500 FCFA per ride. Jakarta motorbike taxis are quick and cheap, though helmets are not always provided.
  • To explore the Petite Côte, renting a car, with or without a driver, gives you the most freedom.

The best time to visit is November to May, dry and breezy. The rainy season (July to October) is hot and humid, but prices drop.
