The old town and its colonial heritage

Rufisque grew rich on the peanut trade, and that past still shows in its historic centre. Explore it on foot, ideally in the morning.

• Old trading houses: balconied façades, arcades and warehouses recall the era of the big merchant firms. Some are crumbling, others restored.
• Town hall and railway station: two landmark colonial buildings at the heart of the administrative centre.
• Traditional neighbourhoods: Keury Kao, Keury Souf, Thiawlène, Diokoul and Dangou keep a strong Lebou community life.

The market and the beach

The central market is the commercial heart of Rufisque. Expect fruit, vegetables, spices, fabric, kitchenware and fish straight off the canoes. Bargaining is normal and good-humoured: a pile of vegetables usually costs 500 to 2,000 FCFA, and fish runs roughly 1,500 to 4,000 FCFA per kilo depending on the species and the season. Go early and keep your bag in front of you.

On the coast, the fishing beaches of Thiawlène and Diokoul come alive in the late afternoon when the pirogues return. These are not swimming beaches: currents can be strong and coastal erosion has eaten into the shoreline. For a proper beach day, most families drive down to the Petite Côte.

Bargny, Diamniadio and the TER

• Bargny, just to the east, is a fishing town known for traditional fish processing: drying, smoking and grilling, largely run by women.

Buses, cars rapides and taxis fill the gaps. With taxis, always agree on the fare before getting in.

Where to stay and living in Rufisque

More families and diaspora returnees are choosing Rufisque for extra space at a lower cost than central Dakar.

• Renting: a two or three room flat usually costs 80,000 to 200,000 FCFA a month depending on the area, condition and distance to the TER. Newer estates around Cité Socabeg, Zac Mbao or towards Diamniadio tend to cost more than the old centre.
• Deposit: landlords commonly ask for two to three months' deposit plus one month in advance.
• Rainy season: from July to October, visit after a downpour to check whether the street floods.
• Daily life: schools, mosques, churches, neighbourhood markets and corner shops are everywhere. Life is calmer than in Dakar, yet the capital stays within easy reach.
