Saly Portudal or Saly Niakh Niakhal: where to stay

  • Saly Portudal: the lively core, with most large hotels, restaurants, craft shops and nightlife. Best for a first visit on foot.
  • Saly Niakh Niakhal: further south and quieter, with villas and furnished residences favoured by families and diaspora on long stays.

Everyday life: shopping, health and money

Supermarkets cover the essentials, while the market and corner shops are cheaper for fruit, fish and bread. Nearby Mbour offers more choice.

  • Health: clinics and pharmacies in town, hospitals in Mbour or Dakar for serious cases. Emergencies: 1515 (ambulance), 18 (fire), 17 (police).
  • Money: Visa works in hotels, supermarkets and many restaurants, but carry FCFA cash for taxis and markets. Use ATMs: exchange offices are scarce outside Dakar and the airport.
  • Weather: November to June is the pleasant dry season; October and early November are hot and humid, so pack sunscreen and repellent.

Getting to Saly from Dakar and AIBD airport

  • From Dakar: 1 h 15 to 2 h on the toll motorway depending on traffic. A taxi from Plateau, Almadies or Mermoz usually costs 30,000 to 45,000 FCFA.
  • From AIBD airport: usually under an hour, roughly 20,000 to 30,000 FCFA by taxi, fare agreed upfront.
  • Train plus road: the TER regional express train runs from Dakar (Plateau) to Diamniadio via Colobane, Hann, Pikine, Thiaroye, Rufisque and Bargny. Finish by taxi.
  • Getting around: negotiate taxi fares. Yango and Heetch take cash or Wave and Orange Money, not cards, and those wallets need a Senegalese SIM and ID.

Saly during the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games

From 31 October to 13 November, the Youth Olympic Games bring athletes aged 15 to 18, their families, visitors and media to Senegal.
