Renting a Car in Dakar

To explore Dakar and its region — the corniche, the Pink Lake, Saly, Lompoul — renting a car offers a freedom taxis can't match. Here's how to rent with peace of mind in Senegal's capital.

With or without a driver?

Two options exist, and the choice changes everything:

• With a driver: very common and often recommended for visitors. The driver knows the roads, handles Dakar's dense traffic and parking, and sometimes doubles as a guide. Ideal if you're not comfortable with local driving.
• Without a driver (self-drive): more freedom and often cheaper per day, but you handle the driving, fuel, parking and any surprises. Recommended if you already know how to drive in dense cities.

For long trips into the interior, a 4x4 with a driver is often the safest choice.

Documents and conditions

• A valid driver's license (national license; an international permit is a plus for visitors).
• ID / passport.
• Minimum age often 21-23, sometimes with a required number of years holding a license.
• Deposit: a card hold or deposit is usually required for self-drive.
• A written contract: read it, especially the included insurance, excess, mileage and fuel policy.

Price ranges in FCFA

As a guide, per day:

• City car / sedan without driver: 25,000 to 50,000 FCFA
• Sedan or SUV with driver: 35,000 to 70,000 FCFA (driver included)
• 4x4 with driver (out of town, long distances): 60,000 to 120,000 FCFA

Fuel is usually extra. Rates drop for weekly rentals. Confirm whether driver, fuel, insurance and tolls are included.

Pitfalls to avoid

• Inspect the vehicle before leaving: photograph scratches, check tires, brakes, A/C, spare wheel and the vehicle's documents.
• Clarify the fuel policy: returning it with the same level avoids surprise charges.
• Watch for limited mileage on some offers.
• Dense traffic: in Dakar, allow plenty of time for journeys, especially at rush hour.
• Parking: in busy areas, informal attendants watch your car for a small coin.

Airport or in town?

Renting at AIBD airport is convenient on arrival but sometimes pricier; in-town agencies (Plateau, Almadies) often offer better rates. Book ahead in high season.

Driving in Dakar: what to know

Driving in the city takes attention: dense traffic, plenty of motorbikes, minibuses and taxis that stop without warning, and some busy junctions at rush hour. Stay patient, anticipate, and keep your distance. Outside the city, road quality varies: some routes are excellent, others rougher, with speed bumps that are sometimes poorly marked and livestock on the road in rural areas. Avoid long-distance night driving as much as possible. Always keep the vehicle's papers, your license and money for any tolls on board.

A car opens up great getaways: the Pink Lake (Lac Retba) about an hour away, the seaside resort of Saly and the Petite Côte, the Bandia reserve for a mini-safari, or the Lompoul dunes further out.
