Bazin riche is the signature fabric of naming ceremonies, weddings and the big religious holidays. It is an imported damask cotton, sold by the metre or as a pagne, then dyed and above all glazed: beating it with wooden mallets gives it that deep shine.

Lead times: the golden rule before Tabaski

Dakar workshops live by the calendar of celebrations. As Tabaski, Korite and the Magal approach, order books fill, making charges climb and waiting times double.

• Drop off your fabric at least six weeks before Tabaski, ideally two months.
• In the final fortnight, many tailors stop taking new orders or add a rush surcharge.
• For a wedding, allow three months between choosing the fabric and the last fitting, especially with matching family outfits.
• If you live abroad, send measurements and fabric well ahead, or plan a stay of at least two weeks.
• The rainy season from July to October slows dyeing and drying, so add a few days.
