Corniche Ouest: road cycling at the Youth Olympic Games

The Corniche Ouest hosts road cycling at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games: how to get there, race day traffic, where to eat, stay and work out by the ocean.

Corniche Ouest: road cycling at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics

Dakar's Corniche Ouest is the venue for road cycling at the Youth Olympic Games, held from 31 October to 13 November 2026. It is one of the few fully outdoor venues of the Games, set right along the Atlantic. This guide covers getting there, what to expect on the roads, where to eat and stay, and how to enjoy the Corniche on any other day.

Why the Corniche Ouest makes a great course

The Corniche Ouest hugs the Atlantic coast from Plateau and Fann up to Ouakam and Les Mamelles, running below Mermoz and Point E. The road mixes ocean-facing straights, clifftop bends and short climbs, with the Mosque of the Divinity, the African Renaissance Monument and the Mamelles lighthouse as landmarks.

For riders aged 15 to 18, crosswinds and early November warmth make it demanding. Spectators get plenty of viewpoints along the pavements and seafront walkways.

Getting there

  • Taxi: from Plateau, Point E or Mermoz, expect a short ride, usually around 1,500 to 3,000 FCFA after some friendly bargaining. From Almadies, Ngor or Yoff, budget 2,500 to 4,000 FCFA.
  • Ride-hailing: Yango and Heetch work well, but you pay in cash or with Wave or Orange Money, not by card.
  • TER train: the line connects Diamniadio, Rufisque, Thiaroye, Pikine, Hann and Colobane to Dakar station in Plateau, where a quick taxi takes you to the Corniche. Parcelles Assainies, Guédiawaye and Keur Massar are not on the line, so leave early by taxi or bus.
  • On foot: staying in Fann, Point E or Mermoz? Walking is often the easiest choice on race days.

Carry FCFA cash. ATMs are easy to find, but street vendors and taxis do not take cards.

Traffic on race days: plan ahead

Road races usually mean closures or diversions along the course, so traffic on the Corniche Ouest and nearby streets will probably be affected during competition. We do not publish any route or timetable here: only official announcements count. Check the Dakar 2026 organising committee's official website or app, as well as city notices, a few days ahead.

A few tips:

  • leave much earlier than usual if you need to cross Fann, Mermoz or Ouakam;
  • plan to walk the last stretch;
  • bring water, a cap and sunscreen, as shade is scarce by the sea;
  • in an emergency, dial 17 (police), 18 (fire brigade) or 1515 (SAMU ambulance).

Eating and sleeping along the Corniche

You will find sea-view restaurants, grilled fish spots, dibiteries and plenty of street vendors. A simple meal runs around 2,000 to 5,000 FCFA, while a sit-down restaurant with a view is closer to 8,000 to 20,000 FCFA per person. For ideas, browse our guide to restaurants on the Dakar Corniche.

Seafront hotels fill up quickly during the Games. Families on a budget can look for furnished apartments in Point E, Mermoz, Sacré-Cœur or Liberté 6, a few minutes away by taxi. Visa is the most widely accepted foreign card in hotels and upscale restaurants, but keep cash for everything else. For your evenings, check out events and entertainment in Dakar.

Working out on the Corniche the rest of the time

Outside the Games, the Corniche Ouest is Dakar's open-air gym. Runners, walkers, cyclists and training groups gather around the outdoor fitness stations. The best times are before 9 am and after 5 pm, once the heat drops. For routes and tips, read our guide to running and working out on the Corniche.
