Swimming lessons for kids in Dakar: a parent's guide

Dakar is surrounded by the Atlantic on three sides, so learning to swim here is less a hobby than a basic safety skill. The good news is that families can choose between baby swim sessions, swimming schools, clubs and large competition pools, mostly in the western half of the city. This guide covers the right age to start, how to pick a format, what to pack and how to keep children safe in the ocean. To compare options, browse our list of kids' activities in Dakar.

What age should children start?

  • 6 months to 3 years, baby swimming: not real swimming yet, but water confidence, always with a parent in the pool. Look for heated water and short sessions of around 30 minutes.
  • 4 to 6 years, water discovery: putting the face in the water, floating, gliding. This is the best window to deal with fear of water.
  • From 6 years, stroke lessons: front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke in small groups by level. Most motivated kids are comfortable in deep water after one or two seasons.
  • From 8 or 9 years, joining a club: for children who love the water, clubs offer regular training and competitions.

It is never too late. Many diaspora kids and children of newly arrived families start around age 10 and catch up quickly.

Schools, clubs or private lessons?

Swimming schools usually run by term or by year, with groups by age and level. Expect roughly 15,000 to 40,000 FCFA per month depending on the number of sessions and the area. Clubs require a membership licence and steadier commitment, in return for proper coaching. Private lessons, often held in hotel or residence pools around Ngor, Almadies or Mermoz, cost more per session, typically 10,000 to 25,000 FCFA, and work well for very anxious children.

Most options are in the west of the city: Almadies, Ngor, Ouakam, Mermoz, Fann and Point E. Families in Sacré-Cœur, Liberté 6 or Yoff are a short drive away. If you live in Parcelles Assainies, Pikine, Guédiawaye, Keur Massar, Rufisque or Diamniadio, the commute is longer, so a weekend slot is often the smart choice given evening traffic.

What to bring

  • A medical certificate confirming your child can do sport, often requested at registration.
  • A fitted swimsuit, cap and goggles. Loose board shorts are frequently not allowed in pools.
  • A towel, flip-flops and a water bottle, since kids dehydrate fast in the Dakar sun.
  • Sunscreen for outdoor pools, applied well before the lesson.
  • A snack for afterwards. Swimming makes children hungry.

The most pleasant season runs from March to November, when the water is warmer. From December to February, wind and cooler water can put off younger kids, so a heated or covered pool is a better bet.

Ocean safety: currents come first

Swimming well in a pool does not mean a child is ready for the ocean. On several Dakar beaches, especially on the northern coast towards Yoff, Malika and the Grande Côte, rip currents and shore break can catch out even strong swimmers. Teach your children these rules:

  • Swim only on supervised beaches, during lifeguard hours.
  • Never fight a current: swim parallel to the shore, then head back to the beach.
  • Stay where your feet touch the bottom, always within sight of an adult.
  • Skip swimming when the sea is rough, particularly during the rainy season.

Calmer coves, such as some beaches in Ngor or on Ngor Island, are better for first sea swims. In an emergency, call the fire and rescue service on 18 or the police on 17.
