Ziguinchor guide: the capital of Casamance by the river

Ziguinchor sits on the southern bank of the Casamance River: green, relaxed and friendly, a world away from the rush of Dakar. This Ziguinchor guide covers how to get there, where to stay, what to eat, how to get around and how to reach Cap Skirring and the villages. You can also browse travel and tourism services in Ziguinchor on SeneFinder to plan your stay.

Getting to Ziguinchor from Dakar

  • By boat: the overnight ferry is the classic way in. You board at the port of Dakar in the late afternoon, sail down the coast overnight and arrive up the river the next morning. Expect roughly 15,000 to 35,000 FCFA depending on seat or cabin. Book early during holidays.
  • By plane: flights from Blaise Diagne International Airport take about one hour. Fares typically range from 50,000 to 120,000 FCFA one way, depending on how early you book.
  • By road: the route through The Gambia, crossing the bridge over the Gambia River, takes around seven to nine hours including border checks. A seat in a seven seater or a bus from the Baux Maraîchers station usually costs 10,000 to 15,000 FCFA. Keep your passport or ID card handy.

Neighborhoods worth knowing

  • Escale: the historic riverside centre, with colonial buildings, banks, government offices, the port and several hotels. The best base for a first, walkable visit.
  • Boucotte and Santhiaba: lively working class areas close to downtown, full of small eateries, shops and workshops.
  • Kandé and Tilène: residential and commercial districts that suit families and longer stays.
  • Lyndiane, Néma and Biagui: fast growing outer neighborhoods where newcomers often find lower rents. A furnished studio generally rents for 75,000 to 150,000 FCFA a month.

Markets, food and hair salons

Saint-Maur market is the commercial heart of town, packed with fruit, river fish, palm oil, spices, fabric and household goods. Go in the morning, when it is cooler and produce is at its best. The craft market near the centre is where to find carvings, baskets and woven cloth. Bargain politely.

Casamance cooking deserves attention: lemony kaldou fish stew, local rice, grilled mangrove oysters in season, and fresh bissap, baobab and madd juices. A plate at a street eatery usually costs 1,000 to 2,500 FCFA, while a sit down restaurant meal runs about 4,000 to 10,000 FCFA.

For hair, neighborhood salons offer braids, twists, weaves and treatments. Long braids take hours, so plan accordingly, and always agree on the price first: from 3,000 to over 20,000 FCFA depending on the style, extensions not included.

Getting around and day trips

Yellow and green city taxis are everywhere. A ride within town usually costs 500 to 1,000 FCFA; settle the fare before getting in, especially at night or with luggage.

Ziguinchor is the gateway to Lower Casamance:

  • Cap Skirring and its beaches are about an hour and a half away via Oussouye, by bush taxi from the bus station or with a taxi hired for the day.
  • Oussouye, seat of the Diola kingdom, the villages of Enampore and Mlomp, famous for its two storey clay houses, and Carabane island, reached by pirogue from Elinkine.
  • Pirogue trips through the mangrove creeks, the bolongs, can be arranged directly with boatmen.

Good to know: the dry season from November to May is the most comfortable time to visit. The rainy season, June to October, brings heavy downpours and rough roads but also lush landscapes. Pack mosquito repellent and carry cash, since ATMs are scarce outside the centre.
