Hotels in Ngor and Yoff, Dakar: where to stay

Ngor and Yoff sit at the northern tip of Dakar, squeezed between the ocean and the airport runway. This is the area you pick when you land late, when you fly out early, or when you simply want to wake up five minutes from a beach. Here is how to choose the right street and the right budget.

Why sleep in Ngor or Yoff

The first reason is logistics. Senegal's international traffic now runs through Blaise Diagne airport in Diass, roughly an hour away by road, but the old Leopold Sedar Senghor airport (LSS) is still a landmark for the whole district: it handles special and business aviation, and locals still use it as a reference point. When someone says a hotel is "near LSS", they usually mean Ngor, Yoff or the Almadies.

The second reason is neighbourhood life. Yoff is a Lebou fishing village that grew into a city district, with its fish market, painted pirogues and streets that stay busy late. Ngor is smaller and more focused on surfers and short-stay visitors. Both offer something Plateau cannot: the Atlantic at the end of the street.

The third reason is price. For a comparable standard, rooms here are often cheaper than downtown Plateau or the heart of the Almadies.

Picking your street: Ngor, Yoff, Almadies

• Ngor village: intimate, walkable, steps from the beach and the boats to the island. Great for a short stay, a surf trip or a stopover.
• Ngor Almadies: larger hotels, restaurants and meeting rooms. A good balance for a trip that mixes work and rest.
• Yoff Layene and Yoff Tonghor: deeply local, with the market, a wide beach and generally softer rates. Best if you want to live in the neighbourhood rather than look at it.

On the mainland side:

• Ngor beach: sheltered and family friendly, easy with children.

High season runs from November to February, dry with cool evenings, then peaks again in July and August when the diaspora comes home. From June to October the rainy season brings heat, humidity and short heavy showers: rates are more flexible and the beaches quieter.

• Book early for December, religious holidays and major Dakar events.
• Confirm whether the transfer from Diass airport is included or billed separately.
• Check air conditioning, the backup generator and water pressure, especially in the rainy season.
• Pay on arrival if your dates are not fully fixed.

Common mistakes

Do not confuse "sea view" with "beach access": some properties overlook the ocean without a direct way down. Be wary of listings that never name a precise neighbourhood. And always agree on the taxi fare before getting in, or use an app, since prices swing widely between Ngor, Plateau and Rufisque.
