The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games run from 31 October to 13 November 2026, bringing athletes aged 15 to 18, their families, coaches and international media to the city. For taxi drivers, agreeing on the fare before the ride is still the norm: a short trip within Dakar often costs between 1,500 and 3,000 FCFA, while a ride out to Diamniadio costs considerably more.

On payments, be practical:

• Visa is the most widely accepted foreign card. If you have a card terminal, test it and put the logo on your door.
• Cash in FCFA is still essential in markets, taxis and small shops. Keep plenty of change, since visitors often come straight from the ATM with large notes.
• Wave and Orange Money work well for diaspora and residents, but most short-stay visitors have neither a Senegalese SIM card nor an account. Don't rely on them alone.
