Minibus rental in Dakar: choosing the right vehicle

Once a group goes beyond seven or eight people, stacking up taxis in Dakar costs more and creates far more hassle than one vehicle with a driver. Minibus rental covers four needs: moving wedding guests, shuttling a team to a seminar, running a day trip, collecting a diaspora family at the airport. Here is how to frame your request and avoid unpleasant surprises.

Capacity: match the vehicle to the job

The right choice depends on the number of passengers and on luggage volume.

• 7 to 9 seater van: family airport transfers, or moving between Almadies, Ngor and the Plateau. With nine passengers and nine suitcases, the boot will be full.
• 15 to 22 seater minibus: the most requested format for seminars, delegations and wedding convoys. It still fits through the narrow streets of Ouakam, Yoff or the Médina.
• 30 seats and above: for large ceremonies, but check access first. Some lanes in Sacré-Cœur, Point E or Parcelles Assainies leave no room to turn around or park a large vehicle.

Book two or three extra seats: groups grow between booking and the actual day.

Weddings, seminars, day trips: three different logics

A wedding is about punctuality and repeated runs: guests are collected at two or three fixed points, a junction in Liberté 6, another in Mermoz, then the mosque or the town hall. State the real finishing time, often late at night: evening rates and waiting hours are negotiated in advance, not at midnight outside the hall.

A seminar needs regular shuttles between hotels and the training venue, sometimes out towards Diamniadio or Saly. The vehicle is tied up all day, so ask for a full day hire rather than a per trip price, and check the air conditioning, a sensitive point between April and October.

A day trip is priced on distance. Lac Rose, Bandia, Somone or Saint-Louis involve very different fuel bills and very different driver fatigue. For far destinations, budget the driver's meals and accommodation, or the empty return leg, and raise it when you ask for a quote.

Budget: the ranges to keep in mind

Prices move with the season and the capacity, but these orders of magnitude help you spot an offer that makes no sense.

• Full day hire inside Dakar, minibus with driver: often between 60,000 and 120,000 FCFA.
• One way transfer from Diass airport to the city centre: usually 35,000 to 70,000 FCFA depending on capacity.
• Day excursion outside Dakar: expect 90,000 to 180,000 FCFA, fuel included or not depending on the agency.
• Multi day event hire: the daily rate drops, sometimes by twenty to thirty percent.

Ask three questions every time: is fuel included, is the driver included, and what happens beyond the agreed mileage. That is where most disputes start.

Seasons and common pitfalls

Demand peaks from December to February, when the diaspora comes home and weddings follow one another, then again around the Magal and Korité. Book two to three weeks ahead in those windows, otherwise only the most tired vehicles will be left.

• See the vehicle before paying, or at least recent photos with the plate visible.
• Put the programme in writing: pickup points, times, waiting periods, final destination.
• Pay a deposit only, never the full amount before the service.
• Plan for traffic: between the Plateau and Pikine, Guédiawaye, Keur Massar or Rufisque at rush hour, double your estimate.
• Check the insurance and that the vehicle papers are on board.
