Best time to visit Senegal

Short answer: November to May, during the dry season, with the sweet spot between December and February. In Dakar the air is dry, evenings on the Corniche are cool, and day trips to Lac Rose, Goree Island or the Saloum Delta happen without rain. The green season still has strong arguments, mostly about price.

Dry season, November to May

This is the classic window. From November to February Dakar usually sits between 20 and 27 degrees Celsius, with an ocean breeze that keeps the coastal neighbourhoods comfortable: Ngor, Yoff, Almadies, Ouakam. Sheltered areas such as Plateau, Point E and Sacre-Coeur run a few degrees warmer.

• December and January: peak tourist season and peak diaspora return. Flights and rentals need to be booked months ahead.
• March to May: still dry, but heat builds inland around Tambacounda and Kedougou. The coast stays breathable.
• Sea temperature is brisk from January to April on the Petite Cote and turns genuinely pleasant from May onwards.

Hivernage, the rainy season from July to October

The Senegalese rainy season, called hivernage, is not continuous rain. In Dakar most of it falls in August and September, in short heavy bursts late in the afternoon or overnight, with long sunny stretches in between. Plan for:

• Localised flooding in low lying areas such as Parcelles Assainies, Pikine, Guediawaye and Keur Massar. Journeys take longer, and driving through standing water is a bad idea.
• High humidity, which makes 31 degrees feel heavier than 33 degrees in March.
• Rough tracks in Casamance and eastern Senegal, where some lodges close for the season.

In exchange the country is green, birdlife in Djoudj and the Saloum is spectacular late in the season, and rates drop sharply.

Harmattan dust and Dakar microclimates

Between December and March the harmattan carries fine Saharan dust across the country: milky skies, hazy sunsets, very dry air. If you have asthma or travel with small children, bring your medication, saline spray and a good moisturiser. Coastal areas like Ngor, Yoff and Mermoz breathe a little easier than the inland districts. Pack a light jacket too: January mornings in Liberte 6 or Sacre-Coeur catch out visitors who expected constant heat.

Events and prices, month by month

• December and January: end of year celebrations, weddings and naming ceremonies, plus the big diaspora return. Airfares and rentals climb.
• February to April: the Dakar cultural season is busy, and it is the best stretch for Saint-Louis, Toubab Dialaw or a day on Goree.
• May and June: a quiet shoulder season, decent weather and reasonable prices.
• July to October: low season, except the August spike driven by diaspora holidays.

Useful orders of magnitude: a decent guesthouse room in Dakar often runs between 25 000 and 60 000 FCFA per night in the dry season, with drops of 20 to 40 per cent during hivernage. A neighbourhood meal costs roughly 1 500 to 4 000 FCFA, and a taxi ride inside Dakar is usually negotiated between 1 500 and 5 000 FCFA depending on distance and time of day. The TER train and the BRT line cut transport costs towards Rufisque and Diamniadio.
