Organizing a baptism (ngente) in Dakar

The ngente traditionally takes place on the eighth morning after the birth. That is when the child's name is revealed, the sheep is sacrificed and the family receives guests. In Dakar this means one very tight week of preparation: sheep, decoration, catering and outfits all get booked at roughly the same time.

How the day unfolds

The religious part starts early, usually between sunrise and mid morning. The imam or a family elder whispers the name into the baby's ear, then announces it to everyone present.
