Planning a wedding in Dakar: steps and budget

A Dakar wedding runs on three separate moments: the religious ceremony, the civil registration and the reception. Whether you live in Ouakam, are flying in from the diaspora or are helping a relative, the questions are the same: where to start, whom to book, how much to set aside. Here is the full path, from the first documents to the last dish served.

The religious ceremony comes first

For most families this is the real starting point: the neighbourhood mosque or the family house, usually on a Friday or Saturday morning, once both sides have agreed on the dowry and customary gifts, commonly 100,000 to 1,000,000 FCFA depending on means and tradition. Catholic couples go through several months of parish preparation in Plateau, Mermoz, Ouakam or Yoff, and church dates from December to May are taken very early.

The civil marriage at your commune

The civil ceremony takes place at the town hall of the commune where one of you lives: Dakar Plateau, Mermoz Sacré-Cœur, Ngor Almadies, Yoff, Pikine, Guédiawaye, Keur Massar or Rufisque. The file normally includes recent birth certificates, copies of identity documents, residence certificates, tax stamps and two adult witnesses.

You also declare the monogamy or polygamy option before the registrar: it is binding, so talk it through beforehand. Fees stay modest, from a few thousand to a few tens of thousands of FCFA, with a supplement for a ceremony held outside the town hall. Living abroad, allow extra weeks to register the certificate with your consulate.

Season, neighbourhood and venue

The dry season from November to May is the most popular: cool evenings, no rain, but venues booked months ahead. The rainy season from July to September brings more availability and room to negotiate, provided you have a covered fallback. Avoid Ramadan, Korité and Tabaski.

Outfits, catering and music

Bazin riche and getzner fabric is bought at the HLM market, then handed to an embroiderer and a tailor: 75,000 to 600,000 FCFA per outfit depending on fabric, with six to eight weeks of lead time. A white dress rents for 150,000 to 500,000 FCFA, and hair, make-up and henna add 50,000 to 250,000 FCFA.

Catering runs from 6,000 to 20,000 FCFA per head: thieboudienne, yassa, mafé, roast lamb or an international buffet, with drinks quoted separately. Many receptions are alcohol free, built around bissap, baobab and ginger juice. Book a sabar troupe, an mbalax DJ or a griot weeks in advance; photo and video packages range from 300,000 to 1,500,000 FCFA.

• Small gathering, 80 to 150 guests: 1.5 to 3 million FCFA.
• Mid-size reception, 200 to 400 guests: 4 to 8 million FCFA.
• Large traditional wedding, 500 guests and more: from 10 million FCFA.

Guest numbers drive every other line, so fix that figure first. Ask for written quotes, pay reasonable deposits, keep about 10 % aside for surprises, and put one trusted person in charge of payments on the day.
