Visiting Touba and the Grand Magal from Dakar

Touba sits about 190 km from Dakar, in the heart of Senegal's groundnut basin. Founded by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, it is the spiritual capital of the Mouride brotherhood and the stage of the Grand Magal, which draws millions of pilgrims every year. Here is how to plan the trip from Dakar, what to expect at the Great Mosque, and how to behave once you arrive.

The Great Mosque and the city around it

The Lamp Fall minaret is visible long before you reach the city. Inside the walls stand the mausoleum of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba and the Khadimou Rassoul library, which holds his writings. The districts of Darou Khoudoss, Darou Minam, Guédé Bousso and Ndame spread out around the mosque, with the Bakhiya cemetery a little further on.

Before you walk in:

• You go barefoot. Wear shoes you can slip off easily and carry a small bag for them.

• Dakar empties out. The long-distance stations in Pikine and Guédiawaye are packed from the day before.
• Berndé, the Mouride open table, means food will be offered to you almost everywhere. Accept simply, or thank your host warmly and decline.
• Fares climb, sometimes doubling, and seats sell out several days ahead.
• The Magal currently falls at the end of the rainy season: heat, humidity and sudden showers. Water and shade matter more than a tight schedule.

Getting there from Dakar

• Intercity bus from the long-distance stations: the cheapest option, often between 3 000 and 6 000 FCFA one way depending on the company and the season.
• Sept-place shared car: faster and more flexible on timing, usually 4 000 to 8 000 FCFA, noticeably more during the Magal.
• Private car or car with driver: the Ila Touba motorway cuts the drive short from Diamniadio. Budget a few thousand francs of tolls for a light vehicle, plus fuel.

Outside peak days the drive takes three to four hours; during the Magal it can easily double. Leaving at night or very early in the morning is the safest bet. From Almadies, Ngor, Yoff or Ouakam, add time to reach the station, because the VDN and the Rufisque road clog fast. From Plateau, Point E, Mermoz or Sacré-Cœur, agree the taxi fare before you get in.

Respect and daily practicalities

Touba is a holy city run by the khalifate: alcohol, tobacco, gambling and secular music have no place there. Dress modestly from the moment you step out of the vehicle, not only at the mosque.

• Greet people in Wolof. A simple salaam aleikum goes a long way.
• Carry water and small change, because walking distances are long.
• Accommodation is mostly with host families, by invitation. Many visitors sleep in nearby Mbacké or head back the same evening.
• Emergency numbers: 17 for the police, 18 for the fire brigade, 1515 for the ambulance service.
