What to do in Dakar between Youth Olympic Games events

Got a three or four hour gap between Youth Olympic Games events? That is plenty of time to ferry over to Gorée Island, explore a museum on the Plateau, climb up to the African Renaissance Monument or swim off Ngor. The trick is simple: pick an outing close to your next venue, not the one you just left.

Plan around your venue

The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, for athletes aged 15 to 18, run from 31 October to 13 November 2026 across three hubs.

  • Complexe Tour de l'Œuf (3x3 basketball, Baseball5, breaking, swimming, skateboarding) and Complexe Iba Mar Diop in Médina (athletics, boxing, futsal, rugby sevens): minutes from the Plateau and the port, perfect for Gorée or a museum.
  • Corniche Ouest (road cycling): beaches and viewpoints from Fann to Ouakam, but expect road closures.
  • Diamniadio (Dakar Arena, Exhibition Centre, Equestrian Centre, Stade Abdoulaye Wade): the TER regional express train links Diamniadio to Dakar station on the Plateau, via Rufisque, Pikine and Colobane. Factor in the round trip.
  • Saly (beach sports, sailing, triathlon): about 80 km away, roughly 1 h 15 to 2 h on the toll motorway. Stay on the Petite Côte between sessions.

For session times and tickets, rely only on the organizing committee's official website or app.

Gorée and the Plateau museums: history in half a day

Gorée Island is reached by passenger ferry (the "chaloupe") from the Dakar port terminal on the Plateau. The crossing takes about twenty minutes and the car-free island is explored on foot. Allow three hours in all: House of Slaves, bougainvillea lanes, Castel viewpoint. A return ferry ticket usually costs a few thousand FCFA, with separate fares for residents and non-residents.

Short on time? Stay on the Plateau. The Museum of Black Civilisations sits right next to Dakar TER station, ideal if you are coming back from Diamniadio. The Théodore Monod Museum of African Art, also on the Plateau, takes about an hour. Entry is modest, often 1,000 to 5,000 FCFA; check opening days first.

Monument, Corniche and beaches

The African Renaissance Monument stands on the Mamelles hills in Ouakam, with sweeping views over the peninsula. Budget about ninety minutes round trip from the Plateau by taxi, traffic permitting.

The Corniche Ouest is great for a walk or a slow taxi ride from Fann to Ouakam: outdoor gyms, cliffs and ocean sunsets. For a swim, Ngor beach and tiny Ngor Island, a short pirogue ride away, are easiest; Yoff is more local. Mind the currents.

Expect around 30 °C: bring a hat, sunscreen and water.

Markets, crafts and money tips

For an hour of shopping, try Kermel market and the streets around Sandaga on the Plateau, or the Soumbédioune craft village on the Corniche, for fabrics, jewellery and carvings. Haggling is expected, so start well below the first price.

Carry cash in FCFA: markets, taxis and small shops run almost entirely on it. Visa cards are the most widely accepted foreign cards in hotels, supermarkets, malls and many restaurants. Ride-hailing apps such as Yango and Heetch are paid in cash or via Wave and Orange Money, not by card. ATMs are the easiest way to get cash. A taxi ride within Dakar usually costs 1,500 to 4,000 FCFA depending on distance; agree on the fare before getting in.

Frequently asked questions

How much time do I need to visit Gorée between events?

At least three hours from Dakar port, ferry and waiting included. Realistic if your next event is at Tour de l'Œuf or in Médina, not Diamniadio or Saly.

Can I visit a museum on the way back from Diamniadio?

Yes, the TER arrives on the Plateau next to the Museum of Black Civilisations. One to two hours is enough.

Do I need cash for these outings?

Yes, keep FCFA on hand for the ferry, taxis, pirogues and markets. A Visa card is still useful in hotels, supermarkets and many restaurants.
