Hardware stores and building materials in Senegal

Building, renovating or simply fixing a door means finding the right suppliers: cement, rebar, tiles, doors and tools are not all bought in the same place, and the right choice depends on quantity and budget. Across Dakar, Diamniadio and Touba, there are plenty of hardware stores and materials merchants to compare before deciding. This guide helps you find your way around and prepare a purchase without surprises.

Cement, rebar and tools: where to look first

For large volumes (bagged or bulk cement, rebar, concrete blocks), materials merchants on the outskirts of town generally offer better terms than small neighbourhood hardware stores, especially when site delivery is needed. For everyday tools, screws, paint or small supplies, a local hardware store remains convenient and gives quick advice. The price of a bag of cement varies by brand and seller, but generally falls between 4,000 and 6,500 FCFA: comparing a few quotes before buying in bulk is always a good idea.

Diamniadio, a growing hub for materials merchants

As the Diamniadio urban hub keeps developing, several hardware stores and materials merchants have set up there, driven by the housing and public infrastructure projects multiplying in the area. These merchants serve both individuals building their own home and construction companies. Their location makes it easier to deliver to sites across the area, from Diamniadio to Rufisque and Bargny.

Tiles, doors and finishing touches: compare before you buy

For tiles, armoured doors or finishing elements (handrails, glass bricks, joinery), it helps to bring exact measurements and, if possible, a photo of the model you want. Tile prices vary a lot depending on quality and origin, roughly between 3,500 and 12,000 FCFA per square metre for common ranges: asking for a sample before confirming a large order avoids colour or size disappointments. For an armoured door, the right choice depends mostly on wall thickness and the type of lock wanted, points worth checking with the seller before ordering.

Site delivery and comparing quotes

Many merchants offer delivery straight to the construction site, a useful service when quantities are large or access is tricky. Before ordering, it is worth asking for a written quote stating quantity, material quality and timeframe, then comparing at least two or three offers. For renovation projects, checking the construction and renovation companies in Dakar helps coordinate materials with the work itself. To quickly find a seller close to a site, the directory of hardware stores and shops in Dakar is the simplest place to start.

Frequently asked questions

Should I go to a large hardware store or a materials merchant?

For tools and small supplies, a neighbourhood hardware store is enough; for cement, rebar or tiles in bulk, a materials merchant usually offers better terms and site delivery.

How do I avoid surprises with tiles or cement?

Ask for a tile sample before ordering a large quantity, and compare several written quotes for cement or rebar, always stating the exact quantity and quality wanted.

Can materials be delivered straight to the construction site?

Yes, many merchants offer site delivery; just ask about the terms and timeframe when you request the quote, since they vary with distance and order size.
